CHAOS ECHOES
Mouvement
CD Digipack

Quote from label: "With the 2015 release of their debut album, “Transient,” Chaos Echœs established themselves as not only one of the most unique bands on the NWN! roster, but one of the most truly innovative bands in the underground metal scene at large—a status reinforced with the release of their second album, "Mouvement." Chaos Echœs continues the psychological and spiritual explorations pursued with their previous works, but whereas the focus of “Transient” was on the individual and the internal forces operating within, “Mouvement” explores the effect of the external on the self—the sharpening of the individual will against the coarse whetstone of world. The music traces a narrative arc, and, other than the break between the sides of the LP, the segments of the composition are seamlessly merged together to create a single piece of music. “Mouvement” begins with a frantic maelstrom of serpentine guitars coiled into a tight knot of anxiety and claustrophobia. The atmosphere is hostile and unsettling. As the first side of the LP progresses, the tension is brought to a boil and then dissipates, carried by an undertow of melancholy into a sea of anguish. Here, the band demonstrates its unique ability to orchestrate dissonance, to weave the frayed threads of entropy into a sprawling and bleak tapestry of emptiness. As the side closes, the mood becomes detached and introverted, a tangle of melodies set adrift in a cavernous bed of reverb draped across a lopsided frame of freeform percussion. The second side of the album opens with the band moving in unison around a snarling riff. It is a willful confrontation, a display of strength in the face of the corrosive forces all around. By the midway point of the side, however, the music becomes repetitious and hypnotic. The cacophony that characterized the earlier portion of the album evaporates into a hazy, ritualistic trance as the individual transcends the world around him. Voices cut through the miasmic field—chanting, conjuring, summoning—guiding the album into a more meditative space. As the side ends, these voices are all that remain. “Mouvement” was meticulously composed and painstakingly recorded, mixed, and edited over the span of two years. The band’s attention to detail is apparent and the impact of the album is stunning. As on “Transient,” the tracks on the new album are structured and stitched together into a larger form such that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And as with all Chaos Echœs releases, the accompanying visual artwork, created by Stefan Thanneur, is as magnificent and intrinsic to the impact of the release as the music itself".

(Description by J. Campbell)

Deriving their name from the last album by their predecessors, Bloody Sign, Chaos Echoes established themselves as France’s masters of Avant Garde Death after quietly releasing a series of EPs featuring the band’s characteristically unorthodox material. Combining magnificent complexity, an exceptionally high degree of musicianship, and a distinct sense of experimentalism, Chaos Echoes is among the most captivating bands in the underground – a band truly incapable of simple categorization. “Transient” reflects the culmination of Chaos Echoes’ work to date. The album is undeniably unique, yet also firmly rooted in the spirit and substance of metal. It is not the product of outsiders peering into and misappropriating metal elements in the service of some impotent simulacra; rather, “Transient” reflects Chaos Echoes’ deep reverence for Death Metal, their passage through the depths of the genre, and the band’s emergence from its depths to peer beyond. The album is meant to be absorbed as one continuous experience as each of the tracks blends seamlessly into the next. Continuing with the pattern developed on previous releases, the more focused and aggressive tracks on “Transient” are held together by the threads of long, ritualistic, and haunting tracks presented in sequence and referred to, in Burroughsian fashion, as “Interzones.” While the album is rich with an atmosphere of intentional experimentation, the focused intensity of tracks such as “Advent of my Genesis” and the frenetic ecstasy of the climactic closing track, “Soul Ruiner,” reveal the detailed composition and calculated precision of “Transient.” As with all of their previous recordings, the music is the undeniable focus of the release, but it is not intended to be regarded in a vacuum; rather, Chaos Echoes puts nearly as much emphasis upon the accompanying visual content (created by Chaos Echoes bassist and accomplished visual artist, Stefan Thanneur). “Transient” is, by far, the most visually ambitious release in Chaos Echoes’ catalog. Accompanying the LP is a 20-page booklet featuring artwork created specifically as an extension of the band’s sonic explorations. Regarded as a whole, “Transient” is unlike any other metal release to date. A perfect synthesis of conservative reverence for tradition and iconoclastic novelty, Chaos Echoes accomplishes with this album something that, arguably, no band has ever successfully done before".

CHAOS ECHOES
A Voiceless Ritual
LP

Quote from label: "Prior to the release of “Transient,” the band’s formative years yielded a series of three limited releases that, while worthy in their own right, also now serve to retrospectively shed light on the improvisational, creative process that resulted in the early EP, “Tone of Things to Come,” and this year’s masterpiece album. Nuclear War Now! is again honored to partner with Chaos Echoes in the reissue of these three releases, known heretofore collectively as “The Occursus Series.” The earliest of these recordings, “Parisian Sessions / Rehearsal I,” documents the very first session that Chaos Echoes ever played in January 2012. The four improvisations contained within were developed following the blueprint drawn by brothers and bandmates, Ilmar and Kalevi Uibo. “Weather the Storm,” as recorded in this rehearsal session, is an embryonic version of the same song that later evolved and was re-recorded as the final track on the “Tone of Things to Come” EP. Several months later, in August of the same year, the “Duo Experience / Spectral Affinities” recording emerged from a session involving only Ilmar and Kalevi as a duo. This sort of minimalist arrangement was envisioned early in the band’s existence, as it was agreed upon from the outset that the composition of Chaos Echoes would take many forms depending on purpose and circumstance. “Duo Experience / Spectral Affinities” offers a different facet of Chaos Echoes’ music, which in this case is characterized by the experimental ambiances and soundscapes of entirely free-form improvisations. The third and final installment in this series, “A Voiceless Ritual,” was recorded live at La Boule Noire in Paris on September 28, 2013, as a testimony of the band’s first concert with a full lineup. The set consisted of instrumental versions of four songs from the “Tone of Things to Come” EP, all rearranged for the live set, in addition to a brand-new and fully-improvised track entitled “Interzone III: La Boule Noire.”
